What Does An EKG Technician Do?

Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technicians are responsible for conducting various tests of a patient’s heart, primarily performing electrocardiograms. Their main role is to aid doctors in identifying and treating cardiovascular problems in patients. EKG Technician duties may include:

  • Performing cardiovascular tests
  • Reviewing images or test results to check for quality
  • Preparing and maintaining diagnostic imaging equipment
  • Recording test findings and keeping track of patient’s records

Where Does An EKG Technician Work?

EKG technicians work in a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, heart centers or private practice offices. Technicians will collaborate with many other healthcare professionals, and there are opportunities to further specialize in other areas such as echocardiography, vascular technology and Holter monitoring.

CERTIFICATION INFORMATION

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified EKG Technician exam. Before taking this exam, students are required to complete at least 10 EKGs on a live person in order to fulfill their clinical requirement.
